Roller derby debuted in Hawaii on July 21, 1954 in a series between the New York Chiefs and Chicago Westerners — presented by local war hero and promoter Ralph Yempuku. The sport was hugely successful on the islands and returned every year through 1958.
When Jerry Seltzer took over the original Roller Derby league, the Derby skipped Hawaii — but the sport returned in 1960 with the Honolulu Hawaiians under the leadership of Hal Janowitz and Dolores Doss. The Hawaiians ran from 1960 to 1966, anchoring derby's Pacific outpost during the sport's golden era.
